Hot Air was formed in 2010 by San Francisco Conservatory of Music students Andy Meyerson (percussion), guitarist Carolyn Smith and composer/conductor Matt Cmiel. Looking for a way to celebrate and promote new music, they chose a name that would reflect the buoyant and unstifled nature in which the music would be presented at the festival, and the little blue blimp of the Hot Air Music Festival flew for the first time.
Hot Air presents music by well-established composers alongside music by up-and-coming new voices. Over the years, some of the more established composers presented include John Adams, with Shaker Loops in 2010 and The Dharma at Big Sur in 2011; David Conte, with Firebird Motel in 2012; Steve Reich, with Electric Counterpoint in 2013; and even Michael Nyman, whose Trombone Concerto was featured in a special 2012 concert.
In the programs of past years, one will also find lesser-known names of rising young composers, whose work is pulled from an international, open call. The Festival is particularly proud to support the vibrant compositional community associated with the Conservatory: current composition students, alumni, and faculty members are well-represented. Perhaps one statistic speaks to the breadth of contemporary music presented at Hot Air; in just 5 years, over one hundred and eighty pieces of music have been performed.
Hot Air will be back next year, with fantastic and varied music performed by equally fantastic and varied performers, all in an atmosphere of spirited enjoyment and levity.

The Hot Air Music Festival is a celebration of contemporary music that provides young composers and performers the opportunity to present new works in San Francisco and engage the community at large. This student-run festival programs a variety of music written in the past 50 years with an emphasis on premiering new works and collaborations. We hope you'll join us at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music on Sunday, March 5th 2023.
"By the time I arrived for a late afternoon/early evening visit, performances were beginning a half hour to an hour late. No one seemed to mind.
Indeed, it was a kind of affirmation of this 5-year-old festival’s burgeoning abundance. The ambitiously full schedule couldn’t contain all the music on tap without spilling over. Attendance for the admission-free concerts was good, and the buzz in the lobby area lively. A number of young children joined the crowd, old and young alike experiencing the unrivaled charge of new music heard live."
San Francisco Classical Voice - Hot Air Music Festival: New Music Rises Up
“As a newbie to modern music, I went into the festival with some trepidation. It’s difficult for someone such as myself who grew up with Bach and Beethoven; most of modern music is still alien to me… Despite this, I was willing to be open minded and was pleasantly surprised by the result.”
The program book described the offering as a “celebration of past, present and future students of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music;” and a celebratory spirit was definitely pervasive.
